Frequently Asked Questions

What is Kairos?

Kairos is a  ministry initiative at Paradise Valley United Methodist Church that seeks to offer innovative opportunities for worship, fellowship and learning about God’s love and grace. The worship service is participatory, multi-sensory, offers a variety of music with a phenomenal music worship team, and weekly sermons from Pastor Kyle Woodrow. Kairos is about offering an alternative form of authentic worship at an alternative time, using alternative styles to convey its message of God’s unconditional love. Kairos is not about what we are doing as much as it is about what God is doing in and through us helping us to reach out to others – to share God’s love and truly, to be a place “Where God’s love becomes action.”

When Is Kairos?

Kairos occurs weekly on Wednesday nights in the Sanctuary at 6:30 p.m.
"Happy Hour" begins at 5:17 p.m. in the Paradise Perk Coffee House
Discussion and small group opportunities begin at 7:30 p.m.
Come to one part or all three. It's up to you.

What Does Kairos Mean?

Kairos is a Greek word for “time” but not just any time. Kairos represents a significant point in time – a definitive time or a defining moment.  As Christians, we claim that this moment is that critical point in human history when God’s will and purposes are carried out.  This means that Kairos is God’s time – God’s defining moment in time. It is a grace filled moment of opportunity and decision where the temporal reality of our lives collides with the eternal reality of God’s redeeming love and grace. This means that Kairos is not just God’s time, but it can be our time as well and is an invitation to live into the God created moment that is our lives and allow our lives to become part of God’s greater movement in the world.

Why Does the "Happy Hour" Start at 5:17 p.m.?

Paul hints at the meaning of Kairos and the significance of God’s time in another way when he writes in 2 Corinthians 5:17, “If anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new!” The service following "happy hour" centers around this passage of turning from the old to new and our beginning time of fellowship at 5:17 is reflective of the scriptural verse 2 Corinthians 5:17.
